Lilydale is located on Melbourne's eastern fringe at the northern end of the Dandenong Ranges. It is the main gateway to the rich wine and fruit growing areas of the Yarra Valley at nearby Yarra Glen and Healesville.

Lilydale's commercial centre extends for around one kilometre along Main Street, with most shops set back along parallel service roads which are lined with trees and landscaped garden strips. The undercover Olive Tree Shopping Centre and Yarra Valley Shopping Centre front Main Street while the larger Lilydale Marketplace Shopping Centre is located off Hutchinson Street.

Along shady tree-lined Castella Street are some of Lilydale's oldest buildings and historic sites. There's Lilydale's old shire offices (built in 1889) which are now home to a museum, the court house (1876) and the Athenaeum (1888) which now serves as a theatre.

Many parks and gardens can be found within Lilydale. The largest surrounds Lillydale Lake and extends along Olinda Creek to the Hull Road Wetlands, located near the junction of Hull Road and Swansea Road. Melba Park, located between Market Street and Chapel Street, is an attractive park with expanses of lawn, BBQ areas, shelters and a playground. One street back from the Main Street shops along Hardy Street is Eyrefield Park where there is a walking track along Olinda Creek, a skate ramp, tennis courts, bowling club and a racetrack for model radio controlled cars. More sporting facilities, including a football oval and swimming pool, are located at the Lilydale Recreation Reserve.

Yarra Ranges Regional Museum Incorporating the original Lillydale Council Offices which were built in 1889, the museum is situated near the main entrance to Melba Park and features many exhibits which tell the story of the local region

Lilydale Athenaeum Theatre Built in 1888, the Athenaeum now serves as a performing arts venue with regular shows

	Lillydale Lake Located off Swansea Road, this 28 hectare lake is surrounded by parkland and wetlands. There's sandy beach areas, fishing jetties, launching facilities for non-powered boats, BBQ shelters, picnic areas and a network of walking tracks. A lookout at the northern end of the lake provides panoramic views across the water to Mt Dandenong and the surrounding Dandenong Ranges.
	Warburton Rail Trail This walking, cycling and horse riding trail follows a disused railway line through the Yarra Valley from the Lilydale railway station through bushland, farmland and fern gullies to the township of Warburton

	Lilydale Show A unique family day experience with a grand parade, demonstrations, displays, live entertainment, rides, market stalls and fireworks
	Yarra Valley Food & Wine Festival Showcasing the best of the Yarra Valley's produce, the festival held over several days includes degustation dinners, cooking classes, opera in the vineyard, tractor tours, wine tasting and a garden party
	Yarra Valley Strawberry Festival Marking the start of the strawberry picking season, the festival is held at St. Patrick's Primary School and offers a family-friendly day with exhibits, rides, games, competitions and lots of strawberry-based foods
