Lilydale is a suburb located on the eastern fringe of Melbourne and is the main gateway to the rich wine and fruit growing areas of the Yarra Valley. Lilydale's large commercial centre extends along Main Street and includes modern shopping facilities and major supermarkets, set on both sides of an attractive tree-lined boulevard. The Stockland Lilydale shopping centre is located nearby in Hutchinson Street and features over 30 retail stores. Along Castella Street (locally known as Church Hill) are some of Lilydale's oldest buildings and historic sites including the town's old shire offices (built in 1889) which are now home to a museum, the court house (1876) and the Athenaeum (1888) which now serves as a theatre. A attractive natural attraction in Lilydale is the Lillydale Lake Park. Accessed via Swansea Road, the park covers 80 hectares and features a large lake with BBQ and picnic areas, walking tracks, a lookout, a clean swimming beach and launching facilities for non-powered boats. |
