The Cape Otway Lightstation is one of the oldest lighthouses in Australia, perched above the cliffs where the Southern Ocean and Bass Strait meet.
The heritage buildings and surrounding grounds that were home the lighthouse keepers and their families are available for the public to enjoy.
The telegraph station contains historical displays related to the lighthouse and its people, while a cafe occupies the assistant lightkeeper's residence.
For a truly unique holiday, some of the original buildings surrounding the lighthouse offer heritage-style accommodation for couples, families and groups, providing the opportunity to gain an insight into the domestic life of a lighthouse keeper's family.
Built in 1857, the Head Lightkeeper's Cottage offers fully self-contained homely accommodation for up to 10 people if the whole property is occupied, or it can be divided by a lockable door into a main section and a B&B suite. The main section sleeps up to 6 people and includes a fully-equipped kitchen, lounge with wood fire, 2 bedrooms and a bathroom. The private B&B suite can sleep up to 4 people and includes 2 bedrooms, a heritage-style bathroom, a kitchenette and a continental breakfast tray. Enjoy views of the lighthouse and ocean from this stately home with its wide verandahs.
Lighthouse Lodge has been newly renovated and can also be divided into a main section and a B&B suite if required. The B&B suite is ideal for couples and includes a bedroom with king bed, kitchenette, bathroom, and a continental breakfast tray.
Lightstation Studio is situated in a section of the original assistant lightkeeper's residence which was built in 1859. Sleeping up to 2 guests, there is a king bed, ensuite and kitchenette. A continental breakfast tray is provided.
While there is no Wi-Fi or TV reception in the area, there is a selection of DVDs for guests. Telstra mobile reception is available. For those who wish to eat out or pick up supplies, the nearest town is Apollo Bay.
When the cafe and grounds are closed to the public, guests staying overnight can enjoy the surroundings, spectacular views and amazing sunsets in private.
